Two Men, One Television, and No Cure

The other night the television was doing what it does best: two well-known men talking over each other about the state of British farming. In one corner, Chris Packham — passionate about the environment, furious about what industrial agriculture has done to our soil, our rivers and our wildlife. In the other, Jeremy Clarkson — equally furious, but about the paperwork, the subsidies, the supermarkets and the sheer impossibility of making an honest living off the land.

They bickered. They scored points. And watching them, one thing became painfully clear: both men can describe the symptoms brilliantly. Neither of them has the cure.

I do. I designed it in 2026.

Seven Months at the Drawing Board

I'm a retired engineer. For seven months I sat down and built something Britain doesn't currently have: a complete, costed, buildable blueprint for national self-sufficiency. Not a slogan. Not a "vision statement". A 28-site sovereign matrix that delivers energy, food and water security in one connected system.

Here's what it actually does — and why it settles the Packham–Clarkson argument for good.

Breaking the Global Gas Stranglehold

Right now your electricity bill is chained to the international gas market. Every time a pipeline blows up or a war breaks out on the other side of the world, your standing charge goes up. That is not energy policy — it's a hostage situation.

The blueprint disconnects UK electricity bills from volatile global gas markets entirely. Power that doesn't depend on the weather, doesn't depend on imports, and doesn't depend on the goodwill of foreign regimes. The target is simple and achievable: the lowest electricity costs in the G7.

The Ultimate Industrial Magnet

Cheap, stable power is the single greatest magnet for industry ever invented. Give a manufacturer the cheapest electricity in the G7 and you don't have to beg them to come — they queue up.

Heavy industry, steel, chemicals, advanced manufacturing: all of it follows cheap power. That means jobs. Real, skilled, permanent jobs. And every one of those jobs is a person taken off the welfare bill and put onto a payroll. This is how you shrink unemployment without cutting a single benefit by decree — you make work pay again.

Plugging the Import Wealth Drain

Britain haemorrhages money. Billions of pounds a year fly out of the country to buy fuel. Millions more go on imported fruit, imported vegetables, imported fish — food we are perfectly capable of producing ourselves.

The blueprint plugs the drain. It turns Britain from a nation that imports its way to dependence into a self-sufficient superpower that keeps its wealth at home and puts it to work.

The Farming, Fishing & Environmental Loop

This is the part that would end the television argument in about thirty seconds.

Each of the 3.62 GW sites produces an enormous volume of waste heated water. Instead of dumping that energy, the blueprint captures it and puts it to work:

  • Hydroponics and vertical farming — year-round British fruit and veg, grown without chemical run-off poisoning the rivers Packham cares about, and without the crushing overheads Clarkson complains about.
  • Aquaculture and mega fish farms — protein grown at home instead of shipped halfway round the planet.
  • District heating — warmth piped into homes that would otherwise sit cold.
And there's a rescue in here too. The waste-heat fish farms and the wider coastal build give Britain's battered North Sea fishing fleet a future instead of a funeral. It is a genuine environmental loop: nothing wasted, everything used.

Packham wants clean rivers and thriving wildlife. Clarkson wants farmers to make a living without drowning in red tape. The loop delivers both — at the same time.

The "Hope-Based" Grid Crisis

Now for the uncomfortable part. The current plan for Britain is, to put it plainly, hope-based.

The government intends to roll out roughly 28 million air-source heat pumps and 33 million electric vehicles, and power the lot of it by hoping the wind blows and the sun shines. On a still, dark, freezing week in January — precisely when demand peaks — that hope runs out.

The blueprint is built the opposite way round. Each site runs a 50/50 split. One half feeds stable, dispatchable power straight into the grid. The other half runs a sea-water-to-hydrogen loop, producing clean fuel.

Here's the clever bit: on a windless winter day, when the grid is gasping, hydrogen production simply pauses and that entire 50% of capacity is redirected to the grid. Built-in surge protection for the whole nation. No hoping required.

Economic Renewal on a National Scale

The blueprint targets more than 500,000 high-skilled jobs — and it deliberately aims them at the very people the current transition has discarded: North Sea oil and gas workers, and the fishing communities being managed into extinction.

These aren't retraining leaflets. They are careers. The knock-on effect slashes the welfare bill and turns Britain into an exporting superpower — with the potential to earn the country up to £2 trillion.

I Led the Horses to Water

So what did I do with a fully costed, self-funding "Cathedral Build" project that solves energy, food and water security in one stroke?

I sent it to 20 cross-party MPs and members of the House of Lords.

The response was absolute silence. Not a rebuttal. Not a question. Not even a polite brush-off. Nothing.

I've come to a hard conclusion about our political class: the technical literacy isn't there, and neither is the long-term vision. They are built for the next election, not the next century. A project designed to last 200 years simply doesn't fit inside a five-year mind.

So the blueprint stays here, on this website, in full public view. When the rolling blackouts arrive — and on the current hope-based plan, they will — nobody will be able to say there wasn't an answer.

I led the horses to water.

More fool them for refusing to drink.
